About S2Biom Project
S2Biom project has been supported by the European Commission under the 7th Framework Programme and have been running from September, 2013 until November, 2016.
The research work in the S2Biom project covered the whole biomass delivery chain - from primary biomass to end-use of non-food products, and from logistics and pre-treatment to conversion technologies. These aspects have been elaborated to facilitate integrated design and evaluation of optimal biomass delivery chains and networks at European, national, regional and local scale. S2Biom work supported the development of strategies to realise the bio-based economy in Europe.
The project activities have been implemented in three individual, but strongly interrelated Themes:
- Theme 1: Data & Tools focused on methodological approaches, data collection and estimation of sustainable biomass potentials. During the work in Theme 1 resource efficient biomass converstion pathways and optimal logistical supply routes have been explored and a computerised toolset has been developed. The toolset contains fully populated databases at local, regional and pan European levels and manuals for their operation, maintenance and updates.
- Theme 2: Strategies & Roadmaps used findings of Theme 1 to develop a Vision, Strategies and a R&D roadmap for the sustainable delivery of non-food biomass feedstock at local, regional and pan European level.
- Theme 3: Validation & project outreach covered the validation of the findings from Themes 1 and 2 and ensured the outreach of project results. This has been done through selected case studies which captured the different scales of applications for biomass supply chains in more than 15 regions across the Europe.
